so i’m really mad about this video because it’s got deinterlacing artifacts

but it shouldn’t because it’s animation and animation doesn’t move every single field (you never animate “on ones” in an interlaced medium!) so there should be no deinterlacing problems but there still are, and it’s because this short aired in the UK a year before airing in the US, so the copy I found online is the UK version and therefore it’s in PAL which means they had to convert the 60i footage to 50i and this caused problems and you can see it as glitches where the frames didn’t exactly line up and I really hate it.

at first I was like “wait, why is this a UK version? there’s no humans in this short, so there should be no dialogue! shouldn’t the japanese and english versions be the same?”

NOPE! cause I forgot, even though pokemon only say their names, those names are different between languages. Wooper here is “Upah” in Japanese, so they had to redub this despite it featuring zero dialogue in any human language.

Anyway it’s a good thing the UK and US names are the same, but it also worries me: maybe the US version is just the UK version up-converted to 60i? That would be terrible. You’d have artifacts both ways.

Clearly I need to track down a copy of the original japanese version if I’m going to get a clean rip of this segment. Ugh. everything is so complicated
