From the new trailer and all the new promotional photos I am 99% sure I figured out exactly how the animatronics are in the film after staring at things for hours.
First there are the standard animatronics. I believe all of them have a body lean, head turns, jaw movement, and eyes/eyelids/eyebrow/ear movements. None of them can move their arms or legs except Bonnie, who has a forearm bend movement to strum his guitar we see in Trailer #1.
Outside of Bonnie’s forearm, all of the shoulder, hand, and forearm joints are manually posable ball-joints done before a scene. At no other point do we see any of the animatronics’ arms move (Except the one curtain-pull shot from Foxy but you can tell someone detached the arm and is moving it with their hands), but we do see them posed differently shot to shot.
Next are the suited characters for all but Foxy. These are all just standard actors in suits with the exception of having animatronic movements for the jaw and facial features. Their arms are tucked into the torso, which is why there’s so much more bulk on these versions. The arms are also split out wider, which are also the standard posable ball joints.
That’s certainly extremely restrictive to not have any movable arms, and you can notice it in a lot of shots. I am happy though that they’re compensating for this by having people move detached limbs off-screen. Foxy pulling the curtain and having a foot crush the ball definitely give a bit of cheesiness to things which is fun.
Probably the most clever shot is of Foxy walking in the arcade. We know his animatronic already has pre-bent legs from pictures, so they make sure to only let you catch a glimpse of it at the end of the shot. They’re literally just bobbing his whole body up and down lol.
I am incredibly excited to see what clever ways they’ll have to come up with shots for the film- especially since Foxy can’t walk around like the other suited actors.
There’s also the FNaF set coming to Universal Hollywood from Sept. 7- Oct. 31. We’re just a week away from being able to see the animatronics in-person. I was so so so worried they weren’t gonna bring em’ out for the general public to see. Can’t wait!
